Westernville Cemetery Association History
 

Our Founding

November 13, 1809 - The south part of the cemetery lot containing nearly one half an acre was purchased of Gideon Hawkins and by him conveyed to the Trusteed of the Friends Society for a burial place.

1818 - The Westernville Presbyterian Church was established.

 

May 16, 1828 - The north part of the cemetery lot, containing nearly one acre was purchased as a burying ground of Calvin Church, and by him conveyed to the Trustees of "The First Religious Society of the Town of Western."

1852 - The Westernville Methodist Church on Main Street was established.

​

September 7, 1868 - The Westernville Cemetery Association was organized by the election of trustees and its incorporation was completed in the manner prescribed by the general law of the State, authoring and regulating the incorporation of Rural Cemetery Associations.

October 5, 1868 - The trustees of the Friends Society and the Presbyterian Society conveyed the above named lands held by them for the purposes of burial to the trustees of the Westernville Cemetery Association.  The east part of the cemetery lot purchased of M. H. Jones and containing over an acre was conveyed to the trustees of the association.

​

1870 - The whole lot, containing about two and a half acres was enclosed with a substantial picket fence.
